Does God Exist and Can We Know Him?

PART 1: DOES GOD EXIST AND CAN WE KNOW HIM?

Key Scriptures

The following scriptures below will make up part one of this series.

If there is one question that has followed humanity throughout history, it is this:

People have searched for the answer through philosophy, science, religion, personal experiences, and countless belief systems.

Some are convinced God is real while others are skeptical. Many simply aren’t sure because the question is intellectual. For others, it is deeply personal.

Perhaps like I have, you have experienced disappointment, loss, or unanswered prayers and wondered whether God is really there. Perhaps you believe in God but are unsure how to know Him personally. Or maybe you have never seriously considered the question before.

I can tell you this, the good news is that God is not afraid of honest questions. In fact, the Bible invites us to seek Him.

The purpose of this study is not to force belief but to examine the evidence God has provided and discover whether He has made Himself known.

For pretty much all of my life that I can remember, I believed God existed. I believed there was a Creator. I would come to realize that believing God exists and actually knowing Him are two very different things.

As I mentioned in the introduction of this series, I spent much of my life pursuing my own desires and living according to my own understanding. There were many reasons for this, too many and too complex to get into on this platform.

While I acknowledged God, I did not truly know Him and honestly I didn’t even want to know Him. The reason was that my understanding of God was shaped more by my opinions, life experiences and others around me rather than by His Word.

As my life progresses I am grateful that I discovered something important:

The issue was not whether God existed.

The issue was whether I was willing to seek Him on His terms RATHER THAN MY OWN!

When I began reading Scripture and honestly pursuing answers, I found that God had already revealed Himself.

The God I eventually came to know was far greater than the version I had thought I knew.

The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul to believers in Rome.

In the opening chapter, Paul addresses humanity’s relationship with God. Rather than arguing that God has hidden Himself, Paul teaches that God has made Himself evident through creation itself.

Paul explains that every person has been given evidence of God’s existence through the world around them. That’s right, everything you see around you is evidence.

This does not mean creation tells us everything about God, It means creation points us toward the reality that there is a Creator.

Let’s break down this verse so we can better interpret what Paul is writing.

“Since the creation of the world”

Paul begins with the natural world. The universe did not appear randomly without order. Wherever we look, we find complexity, design, beauty, and purpose. From the stars in distant galaxies to the intricate design of a human cell, creation points beyond itself.

“His invisible attributes are clearly seen”

God is invisible and we cannot place Him under a microscope. Yet Paul says God’s attributes are clearly seen through what He has made.

Just as a painting reveals something about the painter, creation reveals something about its Creator.

“His eternal power”

The immense scale and power of the universe point to a Creator whose power is beyond human comprehension.

Every sunrise, every mountain range, every ocean wave reminds us that creation is far greater than humanity.

“And Godhead”

This phrase refers to God’s divine nature. Creation testifies that there is an intelligent Creator behind all that exists. The universe is not merely a collection of accidents. It reflects purpose and design.

1. God Has Left Evidence of His Existence

God is not hiding.

Creation continually points toward Him.

2. Questions Are Part of the Journey

Seeking answers is not a sign of weak faith.

Many people in Scripture asked questions.

God welcomes sincere seekers.

3. Creation Should Inspire Worship

The beauty and complexity of creation should move us toward gratitude and awe.

4. Evidence Alone Is Not Enough

Creation can tell us that God exists but it cannot fully reveal His character or His plan of salvation.

For that, we need God’s Word and ultimately Jesus Christ.

Even if God exists, another question remains:

Many people believe God is distant and I can fully relate to that.  Others believe He created the universe and stepped away and still there are others that think God is impossible to understand.

The Bible presents a completely different picture though because throughout Scripture, God consistently reaches out to people.

He spoke with Abraham, called Moses, pursued Israel, sent prophets and ultimately, He sent His Son.

The story of the Bible is not humanity searching for God, It is God pursuing humanity.

This is one of the most beautiful promises in Scripture because I can relate to it with my own life and it is found in Jeremiah 29:13: “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I want you to notice what God does not say.

He does not say: “Seek Me and maybe you’ll find Me.”

He says: “You will seek Me and find Me.”

God promises that those who genuinely seek Him will discover that He is already reaching toward them.

Three years ago ff someone asked me “What is the clearest evidence that God wants to be known?”

My answer would not have been Jesus Christ.

But that is the answer because God did not simply send information, He sent Himself.

Jesus entered human history and lived among ordinary people. He taught, healed, forgave and ultimately He died on the cross for sinners like myself and you.

And He rose again.

Jesus is God’s clearest revelation of who He is.

As Jesus said:

“He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9 NKJV)

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.

Here are some questions you can reflect on:

  1. What has most influenced your beliefs about God?
  2. Have you ever seriously explored the claims of Christianity for yourself?
  3. What evidence of God’s existence do you see in creation?
  4. Why do you think people struggle to believe in God?
  5. If God truly wants to be known, what might be preventing people from seeking Him?

After reading this, over the next seven days spend fifteen minutes each day observing God’s creation.

Watch a sunrise, take a walk, gaze at the stars and take times to consider the complexity of life around you.

Ask yourself: What does this reveal about the Creator?

Then spend a few minutes reading the Gospel of John and asking God to reveal Himself to you through His Word.

Part 2: What Is God Really Like?

Many people believe in God but have completely different ideas about who He is. In our next study, we will examine God’s own description of Himself from Exodus 34:6-7 and discover the character of the God who desires to be known.
