“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV
Have you ever felt distant from God and wondered if He was still working in your life? Maybe your prayers seem unanswered, your circumstances remain difficult, or your emotions tell you that nothing is changing. In those moments, it’s tempting to let feelings determine what we believe about God.
But what if faith isn’t about what we feel at all? What if the strongest seasons of spiritual growth happen when we choose to trust God even when our emotions tell a different story?
When the Apostle Paul wrote, “For we walk by faith, not by sight,” he was encouraging believers to trust God’s promises even when they could not physically see the outcome. Paul faced persecution, hardship, imprisonment, and uncertainty, yet he remained confident in God’s faithfulness.
The phrase “not by sight” extends beyond physical vision. It includes circumstances, appearances, emotions, and human understanding. Paul reminds believers that faith is not dependent on visible evidence but on the character and promises of God.
Biblical faith is choosing to trust what God says, regardless of how things appear in the moment.
Our culture often teaches us to follow our feelings. While emotions are gifts from God and can provide valuable insight, they were never designed to be our spiritual compass. Feelings change from day to day, sometimes even from moment to moment.
One day we may feel confident and hopeful. The next day we may feel discouraged, anxious, or uncertain. If our faith rises and falls with our emotions, our spiritual lives become unstable.
Walking by faith means standing on God’s truth even when feelings fluctuate. It means believing God loves you when you don’t feel loved. It means trusting His timing when you feel impatient. It means continuing to pray when you don’t immediately see results. It means obeying His Word even when emotions pull you in another direction.
Faith anchors us when emotions threaten to drift us off course.
The good news is that Jesus understands human emotions. He experienced sorrow, grief, disappointment, compassion, and anguish. Yet throughout every circumstance, He remained fully surrendered to the Father’s will.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus expressed the depth of His emotional struggle, but He ultimately prayed, “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” His feelings were real, but His obedience was guided by faith.
As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same. God never asks us to ignore our emotions; He invites us to bring them to Him. We can honestly express our fears, doubts, and frustrations while continuing to trust His promises.
The strength of your faith is not measured by how you feel today. It is measured by your willingness to trust God regardless of how you feel.
Here are practical ways to walk by faith instead of feelings:
- Begin each day by reading Scripture before checking social media or the news.
- Write down God’s promises and review them during difficult moments.
- Pray honestly about your emotions while surrendering them to God.
- Replace negative thoughts with biblical truth.
- Thank God for His faithfulness even before circumstances improve.
- Surround yourself with mature believers who encourage your faith.
- Make decisions based on God’s Word rather than temporary emotions.
Faith grows stronger every time you choose God’s truth over fluctuating feelings.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being faithful even when my emotions are uncertain. Help me trust Your promises more than my feelings and Your truth more than my circumstances. Strengthen my faith when doubts arise and remind me that You are always working, even when I cannot see it. Teach me to walk in obedience, confidence, and trust, knowing that Your plans are good and Your timing is perfect. Help me keep my eyes fixed on Jesus and live by faith every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Your emotions may change, your circumstances may shift, and challenges may arise, but God remains constant. His promises never fail, His love never fades, and His presence never leaves you. Keep walking forward in faith, one step at a time. Even when you cannot see the whole path ahead, you can trust the One who leads you.
