This Is the Day: Learning to Rejoice Right Now

Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)

“This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

There are times when I catch myself rushing through the very day God has given me.

I’m physically present but mentally I’m somewhere else.

Thinking about what’s next.

Planning the next move.

Anticipating the next season.

And in doing so, I sometimes miss the beauty of this day.

Psalms 118:24 is both simple and confronting. It doesn’t say, “Tomorrow will be the day the Lord has made.” It doesn’t say, “Rejoice when everything falls into place.” It says:

This is the day.

Not the next opportunity.

Not the next breakthrough.

Not the next chapter.

This one.

The Struggle With “What’s Next”

There’s nothing wrong with vision. There’s nothing wrong with planning. God calls us to plan our future wisely. But when my focus on what’s next robs me of gratitude for what’s now, I’ve shifted from faith to anxiety.

Rejoicing Is a Decision

Psalm 118:24 says, “We will rejoice.”

To me this is a choice.

Joy isn’t always automatic rather It’s intentional.

God made today with purpose.

To me that means:

• The conversations today matter.

• The work today matters.

• The quiet moments today matter.

• Even the challenges today have purpose.

If the Lord made this day, then there is something in it for me to receive and something in it for me to give.

Faith Lives in the Present

Faith doesn’t live in “someday.”

Faith lives in obedience today.

When I rush ahead in my thoughts, I can miss what God is doing right now. It’s happened many times before. It easy to see how we can miss the lesson, the blessing, or even the peace that is available in this very moment.

Today may not look like the future I’m praying for but it is still handcrafted by God.

And that alone is reason to rejoice.
