As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17 NIV
Have you ever had a chance to watch a blacksmith do his work? He takes one piece of iron and using another piece of it to strike, create friction, and sparks of fire. His hammer is made of iron, working on that sword to make it sharp. Focused on getting that sword sharp, he keeps shaping it and the rough spots are removed. It’s important to remember that it takes two pieces of iron, if not it would impossible for that sword to ever become sharp.
In this broken world it seems rare to truly see people interacting, building each other up and refining ourselves as God would want us to do. God wants us to sharpen our friends through His word but we can expect some friction and sparks along the way. I would even say that you can expect this actually but don’t allow that to become a fear to cause you to shy away, remember that the sharpening can’t happen without friction. For me personally, I won’t shy away from critical, constructive criticism which will stem from God’s word.
Hebrews 4:12 says this:
‘For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. ‘
This tells me to sharpen one another whenever possible. As human beings God never intended us to be alone, we would never grow that way and that sword would be nothing more than a dull rusty piece of iron without the other piece and the blacksmith (God). Be a good friend, they type who will make that friend better through God’s image for all of us, even non-believers. Help each other up when they fall, combine your skills for an even bigger accomplishment and fight together against common enemies. I can say a good friend is truly a special blessing, so I will ensure I am doing God’s will and keep sharpening my friends, through His word.
